“Patriotism”
In our lives we go through many changes. These changes are greatly influenced by our environment, priorities, and beliefs. In Johnny Tremain, Johnny Tremain symbolizes his country during the time of the Revolutionary War, in that they both take a brave step towards independence. This process requires Johnny and his country to take many risks and decisions. The American colonists make great sacrifices to get them closer to their freedom.
The American colonists make great sacrifices that get them closer to their freedom. Mr. Otis said, “Some will give their lives,” and looked straight at Rab, “Die so that a man can stand up.” (p.181) The country’s colonists have to make many changes and sacrifices to be free from British rule. The country will have many loses, but in the end they will be dieing so that a man can stand up. The country makes many accommodations for the better of their rites, just like Johnny does.
Johnny Tremain, despite his flaws, gives his best effort to get closer towards independence. Doctor Warren tells Johnny that he may be able to free his thumb, and Johnny asks if it would be good enough to fight. (p. 223) Johnny puts forth his best effort to help his country in their fight for freedom. Johnny is more dedicated to helping his country than helping himself. Johnny dedicates his energy to his country, and has to make many accommodations in his life to take a strive towards liberty.
As a person’s
environment grows and evolves, that person tends to grow and evolve with
it. Johnny’s priorities influenced by
his experiences making him more responsible, mature, and patriotic. Johnny’s experience with these changes
greatly symbolizes his country, in that his country faces great challenges that
are leading them closer to freedom.
Although Johnny Tremain and his country both have to make many
sacrifices for what they believe in, they both take a courageous step towards
independence
