- 1854- Kansas-Nebraska Act: Kansas becomes a slave state and Nebraska becomes a free state.
- 1856- Kansas Bleeding: John Brown led abolitionists against
proslavery people because they hired “border ruffians” to cast illegal
votes so that popular sovereignty would favor them.
- 1857- Dred Scott vs. Sanford: Scott fought the Supreme Court so he become a
free man. Taney (Chief Justice)
said no because the Missouri compromise was invalid.
- 1858- Underground Railroad: Harriet Tubman led
runaway slaves to a safe haven so they can escape the Fugitive Slave Act.
- 1860- Abraham Lincoln elected President: He was a
Republican that was antislavery. This sparked the fight between the pro
and anti slavery people.

Emancipation Proclamation: The
proclamation asking that slavery would be abolished in the Confederate
States.
- 1862- Seven
Days’ Battle: Confederates launch seven day offensive;
suffer heavy casualties, but save Richmond.
- 1863-
The Battle of Gettysburg:
Series of wars in the Civil War.
- 1863-
Gettysburg Address: A speech Lincoln said at the national cemetery of the soldiers
who died.
- 1863-
Homestead Act: Allowing settlers to claim land (160 acres) after they
have lived on it for five years.
- 1864-
General Sherman captures Atlanta.
- 1865- Thirteenth
Amendment: End of Slavery
- 1868-
Fourteenth Amendment: The
Rights of a Citizen
- 1870-
Fifteenth Amendment: Voting Rights
