Pre civil war

 

1852-Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel “Uncle Toms Cabin” was released.  It told about the horrors of slavery, it also made many join abolition

 

1854-The Kansas Nebraska act began, which opened a road for possibility of slavery or freedom

 

1856-John Browns raid on Harpers Ferry, this staged a raid on proslavery settlers and launched four months of guerilla or independent war in Kansas

 

1857-Dread Scott decision happen which enraged republicans that were abolition in this case the supreme court was in favor

 

1860-Lincolin was elected president, his focus was in the debates was slavery in the territories, this made the republicans like him and elect him as their candidate

 

During the Civil War

 

1861-On April 12th at Fort Sumter the opening shot was fired, and war was declared

 

1862-Febuary 6th at Fort Henry gunboats attacked Fort Henry. The Fort surrendered before grants troops could be engaged

 

1862-March 8 Hampton Roads which was the first major U.S. naval encounter.  The North’s Monitior faught the Souths Merrimac, and franklin Buchanan sank the union ship

1862-April 6 & 7th the battle of Shiloh Although victorious, Grant was accused of lacking elementary caution and found himself reviled in the North. The South mourned the loss of Johnston, one of its ablest commanders, who was shot and bled to death

 

1862-June 25th-July 1 was the time of the seven days battle.  During these seven days confederates launched a weeks offensive.  There were also heavy causualties in Richmond  

 

1862-September 17th was the battle of Antietam which was one of the bloodiest day battles of the civil war. Then the union attack was repulsed and the fighting stopped

 

1862-Decmber 16 was the Fredericksburg battle.  Confederate gunfire forced the union troops to retreat from attempts to cross the river.  Finally the confederates won a victory.

 

1863-May 19th-July 4th was the battle of VickburgThe key to the Confederate defenses was Vicksburg, the heavily fortified Mississippi city that commanded the river from its high bluffs.

 

1863-Homestead act becomes a law, allowing settlers to claim land after they have lived on it for five years

 

1865-Lincoln is assassinated in Washington DC. and is succeeded by his vice president Andrew Jackson
