“Boy to Man”
“The miserable hath no other medicine but only hope.” (William Shakespeare) In Johnny Tremain, a devastating hand and accident affects Johnny’s physcological well-being and causes his personality to change from and arrogant boy to a humble man. Johnny starts to realize that he treats people disrespectfully, so therefore, he try’s to change his ways so he becomes a more mature human-being.
Johnny’s future and spirits are both weakened by his hand injury. As Johnny sat and cried, he said, “I can’t do decent work I cant ever be a silversmith- not even a watchmaker. My friends don’t want me to touch them with my dreadful hand.” Johnny’s friends treat him as an outcast and almost a different person due to his hand accident. Johnny’s confidence and pride in himself decreases. Through out the book, Johnny starts to become a more respectable person because his attitude changes.
Since his accident Johnny has become a more of a caring and respectful person. Johnny questionably asked, “’Cillia, do you come over often to fetch water?’ It hurt him that the heavy yoke and the two buckets which he had worn so often, to his humiliation, had somehow descended upon her this shoulders. Johnny cares for Cillia and wants to help her. He has compassion and feels her pain. Johnny’s personality transforms into a more mature individual.
Although Johnny burns his hand and ruins it, the end result happened for
the better. He became a more matuyre and
understanding young man.
