1853- Gasden Purchase treaty is signed and the U.S receives 10 million dollars from Mexico

 

1854- Congress passes the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and establishes the territories of Kansas and Nebraska

 

1857- Dred Scott vs. Sanford (landmark supreme court decision)

 

1859- John Brown, an Abolitionist, captured federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry

1861- Civil War begins, between the Northern and Southern states that seceded from the Union and formed the confederacy

 

1863- The Battle of Gettysburg was one of the most noted battle of the Civil War

 

1864- Sherman William Tecumseh was a Union General in the Civil War and was told to be the greatest of the Civil War Generals

 

1865- Grant Ulysses Simpson was commander in chief of the union army in the civil war Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee

 

1868- Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution is ratified

 

1869- Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads are joined at Promontory, Utah making the first transcontinental railroad

 

1870- The fifteenth amendment gave the blacks the right to vote

 

1877- First telephone line is built from Boston to Somerville Massachusetts

 

1882- U.S adopts standard time

 

1886- Statue of liberty is devoted Statue of Liberty
